Neutrinos May Not Travel Faster Than Light After All

Researchers in Italy say a bad connection between devices could explain a startling result they had last year, when they thought they'd witnessed particles traveling faster than the speed of light. Further tests await, but it appears there was a subtle problem with the equipment at the lab, as many physicists had expected. The laws of physics may not need to be rewritten after all.

Breakthrough in designing cheaper, more efficient catalysts for fuel cells

ScienceDaily (Feb. 23, 2012) ? University of California, Berkeley, chemists are reimagining catalysts in ways that could have a profound impact on the chemical industry as well as on the growing market for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Catalysts are materials ? typically metals ? that speed up chemical reactions and are widely used in the synthesis of chemicals and drugs. They also are employed in automobile catalytic converters to change combustion chemicals into less-polluting emissions and in fuel cells to convert water into hydrogen.

The problem with catalysts, however, is that chemical reactions occur only at edges of or defects in the material, while the bulk of the metal -- often expensive platinum -- is inactive and wasted.

In an article appearing recently in the journal Science, UC Berkeley chemists show how to construct a catalyst composed only of edges and demonstrate that it can catalyze the production of hydrogen from water as readily as the edges and defects in regular catalysts.

"This is a conceptual advance in the way we think about generating hydrogen, a clean-burning fuel, from water, a sustainable source," said Christopher Chang, associate professor of chemistry and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator at UC Berkeley. "Our new catalyst is just first generation, but the research gives us and the community a path forward to thinking about how to increase the density of functional active sites so that molecules and materials can be more effective catalysts."

At the moment, creating these catalysts in the lab is not cheaper than using traditional catalysts, but efforts by Chang and others to simplify the process and create materials with billions of active sites on a ridged wafer much like a Ruffles potato chip could allow cheaper, commercially viable fuel cell catalysts.

"The development of new earth-abundant catalysts for water splitting is an essential component of the global effort to move away from fossil fuels and towards solar energy," said coauthor Jeffrey Long, UC Berkeley professor of chemistry and faculty scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Chang and his UC Berkeley colleagues worked with a common catalyst, molybdenite, that is less expensive than platinum and of increasing interest as a fuel cell catalyst. Composed of molybdenum and sulfur (MoS2), the material catalyzes reactions like the splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen only at the edges, where triangles of molybdenum and two sulfur atoms stick out like pennants.

"These edge sites look like little MoSS triangles, and the triangular area does the business," Chang said.

Using complex organic synthesis techniques, Chang said he and his colleagues created a small carbon framework to hold the MoSS triangle so that "every molecule has a discrete edge site that is a catalytically active unit."

When lots of these single-molecule catalysts were dumped into acidic water and even seawater and electrodes inserted to provide electrical current, they generated hydrogen for several days without letup.

In future research, Chang hopes to assemble billions of these molecules on a thin, ridged wafer, maximizing the number of catalytic sites for a given volume and boosting ultimate efficiency. He also hopes to provide the electrical input from the sun.

"There are many other types of materials out there for which people might want to generate edge-site fragments rather than use a bulk material with just a few edge or defect sites," Chang said. "With hydrogen being touted as a clean burning fuel that generates no CO2, creating cheaper and better catalysts has become a big and important field now. The main push is toward more earth-abundant materials than the rare metals like platinum."

Chang and Long's UC Berkeley coauthors are post-doctoral fellows Hemamala I. Karunadasa, Elizabeth Montalvo and Yujie Sun, and professor of chemistry Marcin Majda. Chang, Long and Sun also hold positions at LBNL. Kuranadasa is now a post-doc at the California Institute of Technology.

The research was funded through the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis, a Department of Energy Energy Innovation Hub and LBNL's Helios Solar Energy Research Center.

thequestionclub: How Long Is Too Long To Wait?

i'd wait until i was willing to put my big girl pants on and talk about it.

if that happened, and i wanted to get married, i'd bring up the conversation. i don't expect someone to propose to me without having any idea at all if i'd be interested in a marriage first.

"marriage" as an abstract isn't important to me at all. i don't have any need or desire to be married for the sake of dwelling within that institution. i'd like the LEGAL FUCKING RIGHT to be married, for sure, but it's not terribly important to me. i would certainly, however, consent to marrying a particular person. and if they weren't willing to marry me? then i'd be obliged to date them for the rest of my natural life instead. i don't need the validation of a marriage, i see it instead as a protection.

if you yourself value marriage, and you are wondering if your current partner will ask or not, perhaps you should broach the subject. ask them if they want to get married (make it clear that this isn't the proposal), even.

i think the wedding band is useful as a means of communicating when someone is off the market. the wedding band has stopped me from making moves before. i'd be slightly annoyed if someone didn't wear it.

Pulsars: The universe's gift to physics

ScienceDaily (Feb. 20, 2012) ? Pulsars, superdense neutron stars, are perhaps the most extraordinary physics laboratories in the Universe. Research on these extreme and exotic objects already has produced two Nobel Prizes. Pulsar researchers now are poised to learn otherwise-unavailable details of nuclear physics, to test General Relativity in conditions of extremely strong gravity, and to directly detect gravitational waves with a "telescope" nearly the size of our Galaxy.

Neutron stars are the remnants of massive stars that exploded as supernovae. They pack more than the mass of the Sun into a sphere no larger than a medium-sized city, making them the densest objects in the Universe, except for black holes, for which the concept of density is theoretically irrelevant. Pulsars are neutron stars that emit beams of radio waves outward from the poles of their magnetic fields. When their rotation spins a beam across Earth, radio telescopes detect that as a "pulse" of radio waves.

By precisely measuring the timing of such pulses, astronomers can use pulsars for unique "experiments" at the frontiers of modern physics. Three scientists presented the results of such work, and the promise of future discoveries, at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Pulsars are at the forefront of research on gravity. Albert Einstein published his theory of General Relativity in 1916, and his description of the nature of gravity has, so far, withstood numerous experimental tests. However, there are competing theories.

"Many of these alternate theories do just as good a job as General Relativity of predicting behavior within our Solar System. One area where they differ, though, is in the extremely dense environment of a neutron star," said Ingrid Stairs, of the University of British Columbia.

In some of the alternate theories, gravity's behavior should vary based on the internal structure of the neutron star.

"By carefully timing pulsar pulses, we can precisely measure the properties of the neutron stars. Several sets of observations have shown that pulsars' motions are not dependent on their structure, so General Relativity is safe so far," Stairs explained.

Recent research on pulsars in binary-star systems with other neutron stars, and, in one case, with another pulsar, offer the best tests yet of General Relativity in very strong gravity. The precision of such measurements is expected to get even better in the future, Stairs said.

Another prediction of General Relativity is that motions of masses in the Universe should cause disturbances of space-time in the form of gravitational waves. Such waves have yet to be directly detected, but study of pulsars in binary-star systems have given indirect evidence for their existence. That work won a Nobel Prize in 1993.

Now, astronomers are using pulsars throughout our Milky Way Galaxy as a giant scientific instrument to directly detect gravitational waves.

"Pulsars are such extremely precise timepieces that we can use them to detect gravitational waves in a frequency range to which no other experiment will be sensitive," said Benjamin Stappers, of the University of Manchester in the UK.

By carefully timing the pulses from pulsars widely scattered within our Galaxy, the astronomers hope to measure slight variations caused by the passage of the gravitational waves. The scientists hope such Pulsar Timing Arrays can detect gravitational waves caused by the motions of supermassive pairs of black holes in the early Universe, cosmic strings, and possibly from other exotic events in the first few seconds after the Big Bang.

"At the moment, we can only place limits on the existence of the very low-frequency waves we're seeking, but planned expansion and new telescopes will, we hope, result in a direct detection within the next decade," Stappers said.

With densities as much as several times greater than that in atomic nuclei, pulsars are unique laboratories for nuclear physics. Details of the physics of such dense objects are unknown.

"By measuring the masses of neutron stars, we can put constraints on their internal physics," said Scott Ransom of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. "Just in the past three to four years, we've found several massive neutron stars that, because of their large masses, rule out some exotic proposals for what's going on at the centers of neutron stars," Ransom said.

The work is ongoing, and more measurements are needed. "Theorists are clever, so when we provide new data, they tweak their exotic models to fit what we've found," Ransom said.

Pulsars were discovered in 1967 and that discovery earned the Nobel Prize in 1974.

Quit Smoking ? Withdrawal and Timeline | Health and Fitness

The notation we give up smoking, withdrawal symptoms will really come for you. I?m not scaring we though; I?m only saying, it?s a body?s approach of detoxifying as well as yes, vouchsafing us know which ?it?s payback time?. After we give up smoking, we will rught away get results, nonetheless we would substantially feel otherwise.

Withdrawal symptoms change from chairman to person, infrequently depending upon how many sticks or packs we smoked in a day. (For me, it took roughly a month given we could finish 2 packs every day in my 10-year nicotine-binge.) The symptoms come in a accumulation of forms, though all due to lowered red red red blood sugarine levels. (Nicotine is pronounced to trigger a little viscera as well as releases some-more than normal red red red blood sugar.) The many usual of which have been a following:

    - Smokers? cough.

    - Headaches, trimming from amiable to severe.

    - Depression as well as loneliness.

    - Fatigue.

    - Anxiety attacks.

    - Dizziness as well as nausea.

    - Loss of thoroughness as well as a exaggeration of time.

    - Weight benefit due to candy craving.

    - Shortness of exhale and/or worry in respirating (in life-threatening cases).

According to my research, here is a give up smoking timeline. This identifies what happens to your physique a impulse we stop smoking.

    - twenty mins after stopping: Blood pressure, beat rate as well as physique heat (specifically of hands as well as feet) will lapse to normal.

    - After 8 hours: Carbon monoxide as well as oxygen levels adjusts to go behind to normal.

    - twenty-four hours: It is pronounced which a chances of carrying a heart conflict decreases once we pass a 1-day mark.

    - 48 hours: Nerve endings lapse to normalcy, giving your senses a newfound feeling. Your 5 senses, privately which of inhaling as well as exhaling as well as tasting becomes some-more supportive as well as extended to air as well as a food eaten.

    - 72 hours: You will right away be 100% nicotine-free as well as some-more than 90% of chemicals found in nicotine will be burning out of a physique around urine. The cravings might enlarge during this stage, though once we get over it, we won?t go back. Breathing right away becomes most easier.

    - 2 weeks to 3 months: An ex-smoker?s red red red blood dissemination improves. Oxygen is right away uniformly as well as healthily distributed to a total body. Walking as well as sportive right away becomes an choice to have for healthier living. He right away has regenerated lungs, as a duty increases by up to 40 percent.

    - 1 to 9 months: The body?s appetite increases; left is a tired of past withdrawal symptoms. Smoker?s cough as well as crispness of exhale decreases drastically, with occasional coughing as well as if you?re lucky, infrequently not even display a snippet of it during a finish of 9 months. Air sacs (specifically cilia) re-grows in a lungs, as well as helps make firm lung function.

    - 1 year: The risk of coronary heart mildew has severely decreased.

FCC plans to nix wireless network that may jam GPS (AP)

NEW YORK ? Federal officials plan to kill a private company's plans to start a national high-speed wireless broadband network after concluding it would in some cases jam personal-navigation and other GPS devices.

The Federal Communications Commission said it will seek public comment as early as Wednesday on revoking LightSquared's permit after a federal agency that coordinates wireless signals, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, concluded that there's no way to mitigate potential interference.

When the FCC gave LightSquared tentative approval last year to build the network, it said the company won't be allowed to start operations until the government was satisfied that any problems are addressed. LightSquared and the FCC had insisted the new network could co-exist with GPS systems.

Device makers, however, feared that GPS signals would suffer the way a radio station can get drowned out by a stronger broadcast in a nearby channel. The problem is that sensitive GPS receivers, designed to pick up relatively weak signals from space, could be overwhelmed by high-power signals from as many as 40,000 LightSquared transmitters on the ground. LightSquared planned to transmit on a frequency adjacent to that used by GPS.

After conducting tests, the NTIA said Tuesday that it found interference with dozens of personal-navigation devices and aircraft-control systems that rely on GPS.

The agency said that new technology in the future might mitigate the problems, but it would take time and money to replace GPS equipment already used extensively in the U.S. The NTIA, a branch of the Commerce Department, also said adjustments to LightSquared's network could cost billions of dollars and might not solve all of the problems.

Virginia-based LightSquared had no immediate comment Wednesday.

LightSquared had hoped to compete nationally with super-fast, fourth-generation wireless services being rolled out AT&T, Verizon Wireless and other traditional wireless companies. It hadn't planned to sell directly to consumers. Rather, it would have provided network access to companies including Leap Wireless, parent of the Cricket phone service, and Best Buy, which planned to rebrand the service under its own name.

Making more airwaves available has been one of the FCC's top goals. Wireless companies have been clamoring for greater ability to feed consumers' appetites for movies, music and games on a variety of mobile devices.

FCC spokeswoman Tammy Sun said the experience with LightSquared "revealed challenges to maximizing the opportunities of mobile broadband for our economy."

The foundation of all nations is based on small businesses! The trading of possessions and resources was the first small business, but how did they market their goods? I would say they used social marketing &/or word of mouth advertising. This was and always will be one of the best ways to promote your business because it is based on relationships. Relationships bring people together and help people depend on one another. Friendships blossom out of relationships and this all makes people work harder to provide a good product or service for their new friend.

What other tools have small business owners used to market their goods? It has been around for a really long time?.The business card! Ya, the business card is a priority for all business owners. This is just as important as social marketing. So, we know social marketing and business cards are a priority for small business owners to increase their revenue, but what else? Business advertising signs. Printed advertising like the business card has been and always will be a must for all business owners. So, we know that social marketing and printed advertising are two tools for helping small business owners grow, but what else must they have to stay competitive in today?s market? Internet exposure! Yes, internet exposure is now as important as social marketing and printed advertising. The internet allows business owners to use social marketing and printed adverting in one place and expose their business to a much larger fan base.

The internet has forced many small businesses out of work because they did not use it. This is a sad statement but it is true. Small businesses are realizing they must have internet exposure to keep them competitive or else. Many of these small businesses avoid using the internet to market their business due to the price or complication. This is where VPKansas comes in. Ricky Martin Talks Sex, Gay Marriage, Fatherhood And What He's Done For Love In 'Details'

Ricky Martin has remained mostly tight-lipped about his personal life since coming out in 2010. But in the latest issue of Details magazine, the Latin pop singer reveals some surprisingly intimate details about both fatherhood and his relationship with longtime partner Carlos Gonzalez.

In the interview, the 40-year-old Martin quickly dismisses reports that he had sought citizenship in Spain in an effort to wed Gonzalez under that nation's same-sex marriage laws. "Everybody is asking me when I?m going to get married," he said. "People that I don?t know are pushing it. But it?s not something that we?re talking about."

Still, the star -- who has previously spoken of his desire to get married -- talks in depth about his views on marriage equality: "I don't want to blame the government. I think there?s a stolen faith ?- an interpretation of what God 'says.' That's your God -- I have my God. It?s about civil rights. I'm not telling you what to believe. I wish people understood that love manifests in different ways. Allow me to have my life and I won?t mess with yours."

Other choice quotes from the interview:

    On working out:
?I'm a father to two toddlers. And lifting them is a workout ? this is biceps, this is triceps. I also try to make love. That helps."

On the most spontaneous thing he had ever done for a man:
"I cancelled a show once to be with someone that I loved. My manager came up with some excuse. It was the most expensive date I?ve ever been on."

When you came out, you said, ?I am, very blessed to be who I am." What did you mean?
"Well, I don?t know who your God is, but my God doesn?t make mistakes."

Martin is also certainly keeping busy on the professional front. Having won raves for his guest appearance on the hit TV series "Glee," he's scheduled to star in the much-anticipated Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical "Evita," opposite Argentine actress Elena Roger in the title role.

No need to rush Howard's return

    February 14, 2012, 11:38 am

    ? ? ?
The Phillies begin spring training Sunday in Clearwater, Fla. In the final days before camp begins, we take a daily look at some of the issues the team will encounter in camp.

Monday ? Chase Utley (see story)
Tuesday ? Ryan Howard and first base
    Wednesday ? Bullpen
    Thursday ? Starting rotation
    Friday ? Cole Hamels
    Saturday ? Offense
    Sunday ? Outfield

If Chase Utley fielding ground balls while seated on a stool was the lasting image of spring training 2011, then Ryan Howard falling to the ground with a snapped Achilles? tendon was the indelible image of the entire season.

Howard tore the tendon on the final swing of the final night of the season as the Phillies were eliminated from the playoffs by St. Louis in Game 5 of the National League Division Series.

The injury was surgically repaired and a little over four months later Howard is moving along in his rehabilitation in Florida. When he is able to play is one of the big questions surrounding this team. It will not necessarily be answered in spring training, but we should get some clues. Team officials hope Howard can do baseball related activities by the end of this month. If he continues to progress, he will work himself into faster, more intense drills on the field. If he progresses beyond that, he may see some limited or controlled game action late in camp. The team has ruled out Howard being ready for opening day and set May 1 as a loose, give-or-take target for his return to action. But nothing is certain. It all depends on how he progresses. The team will not rush his return, not with six ? ideally seven ? months of season to play, and not with Howard, 32, beginning a five-year, $125 million contract extension.

?This is not about how fast he gets back,? general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. ?It?s how well he gets back. Our job is to make sure Ryan is back on the field and playing at his accustomed level and not have to worry about a setback. The closer he is to 100 percent, the better off we?ll be long term with him. We?re cautiously optimistic he?ll be back sometime in May.?

The Phillies will have to replace Howard at first base and in the cleanup spot, where he has posted six straight seasons of at least 30 homers and 100 RBIs.

Manager Charlie Manuel will get the chance to look at several players in the cleanup hole in spring training, but when it comes time to fill out the lineup card on April 5, rightfielder Hunter Pence is expected to be in that spot.

Ty Wigginton, Jim Thome and John Mayberry Jr. are all candidates to see time at first base while Howard continues to mend. Wigginton, acquired in an offseason deal with Colorado, could be the lead candidate for work. He is also an insurance policy at third base, where Placido Polanco is coming off surgery to repair two groin tears.

Thome, a Philly favorite, returns to the club but in a different role than he played from 2003-2005. Then he was backbone of the club at first base. Now, he will be a power bat off the bench and occasional first baseman. He has not played the position the last four seasons and will use spring training to gauge whether he can handle some part-time duty there. If Thome?s glove (and balky back) can hold up at first base, he could give the team some innings in April. (Wouldn?t it be cool to see him jog out of the dugout and man the position in the April 9 home opener?)

The team?s preference is to use Mayberry in leftfield. In fact, he comes into camp with a leg up on being the primary leftfielder. However, he was a first baseman at Stanford and played 100 innings at the position last year, so he will get some time there this spring (with Laynce Nix, Scott Podsednik, Domonic Brown and Juan Pierre getting time in left) and possibly during the season as the Phils wait for Howard to get healthy.

    95% Pina

    All Critics (78) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (73) | Rotten (4) | DVD (1)

For anyone with an interest in dance, "Pina" is a must-see. For anyone not interested in contemporary dance, "Pina" is a should-see. It could change your mind.

Pina is a tribute of an artist by an artist, a friend to a friend. But its great genius comes from the mournful, as well as celebratory, reckoning of the performers Bausch pushed, collaborated with and inspired.

What might seem like a convenient bid for publicity - the first 3-D art-house film! - turns out to be the only logical way to showcase the action.

This meditation on movement and space, transportation and transcendence is not to be missed.

What the filmmaker has created is an inspired simulacrum - a jewel-box that contains more of Bausch's kinetic soul than film has any right to.

Crane and steadycam allow Wenders to get so close to the action that in the minimalist Caf? M?ller, one's illusion of being on stage is uncanny.

A unique and often sublime artistic experience, "Pina" is a 3-D dance film that immerses us in the movement, letting us feel that we could reach out and touch these dancers as they float past us.

Outsiders might have more difficulty comprehending Bausch's mastery, especially whacked up into bite-sized pieces of inscrutable emotion and abrupt movement.

Dance fans won't want to miss it, but be prepared to be frustrated almost as often as you're awed.

Exciting if elusive - appealing to dance enthusiasts

Wenders and the Tanztheater company have combined to offer a masterful tribute to Bausch's unique vision, one that's enhanced by 3D.

A spectacular show of movement and stagecraft.

Sans 3D, Pina becomes a more unified work of undisputed merits, a passionate, fitting tribute from one of Europe's preeminent filmmakers and documentarians.

Pina is as rich in imagery and emotion as any film released this year and in some cases moreso.

This seems like a ripping good idea. In practice, "Pina" turns out to have a few problems.

Suggests thrilling new possibilities for the marriage of movies and dance.

Wenders, who so wanted to see the world through Pina's eyes, has done something even better. He's allowed posterity to see her world, and in a way as breathtaking as the work itself.

Even for someone who would rather count sheep than attend a ballet, these scenes are nothing short of astonishing, beautifully presenting dance's ability to depict words.

A milestone in dance and 3D filmmaking.

You won't hear the names Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham, Paul Taylor or Bob Fosse breathed herein.

(AP Photo/Charles Sykes, file)

(AP) ? Two more autism-friendly performances of Broadway musicals will be offered this spring and fall following the success last year of the first showing of a Broadway show specially altered for those diagnosed with the disorder.

The Theatre Development Fund, a nonprofit organization focused on providing access to live theater, said Tuesday it plans to offer specially designed matinee showings of "Mary Poppins" on April 29 and "The Lion King" on Sept. 30.

The move comes after the Fund got enthusiastic feedback from grateful families when it launched a pilot effort in October with an autism-friendly showing of "The Lion King."

"It went so much better than any of us had hoped," said Victoria Bailey, the Fund's executive director. "The value of being able to go to the theater as a family with kids on the autism spectrum and their siblings in an environment that felt safe was huge."

Autism disorders strike one in 100 children, according to U.S. government estimates. Children with the diagnosis are often sensitive to loud noises and harsh lights and find it difficult to sit still or remain quiet. Autism spectrum disorders include both severe and relatively mild symptoms.

After news of the initial performance of "The Lion King," about 1,500 people expressed interest in additional shows, organizers said.

"It says to me that there is an enormous pent-up desire for this," Bailey said. "There's a huge need."

The Fund, which has bought out both theaters for the special dates, will offer tickets at discount prices from its website. It said the "Mary Poppins" performance at the 1,797-seat New Amsterdam Theatre is nearly sold out and tickets to the performance of "The Lion King" at the 1,677-seat Minskoff Theatre will go on sale in late spring.

Both shows, presented by Disney Theatrical Productions, will be slightly altered to make those with autism more comfortable, including cutting jarring sounds and strobe lights. Quiet areas with beanbag chairs and coloring books, staffed by autism experts, also will be created inside the theater for those who might feel overwhelmed.

To accommodate the special audience, experts identified several moments in "The Lion King" when the sound or lights needed to be toned down, but none was more than 30 percent softened. There were seven changes in all, including the volume adjusted down in the opening number, on steam blasts and on Mufasa's roar at the Elephant Graveyard. Actors walking in the aisles were kept, to the delight of the audience.

The Fund, which has consulted an advisory panel of experts in the field of autism, has also made itself available to consult with other theaters attempting their own autism-friendly performances. It also publishes a downloadable guide telling children with autism what to expect during the show, including what ushers do and what to do during a curtain call.

Organizers learned some lessons after the initial performance, including that some families can stay only for part of the show and that there's a need to warn theatergoers about any props or set design that might move over the seats. Converting bathrooms for unisex use also will be attempted this time to accommodate children and their parents.

The team has learned how to make "The Lion King" accommodating to those with the developmental disorder and now they must tackle "Mary Poppins."

"We're working with that creative team to figure out where the tweaks need to be in the performance," Bailey said. "You have to listen really carefully. You have to provide the service and let the people who know the expertise help you."

Israel's president sends message of peace to Iran (AP)

JERUSALEM ? Israel's president reached out to the Iranian people with a message of peace Wednesday, as the West tightened sanctions over Iran's nuclear program, and a former Israeli spymaster said Israel is not in mortal danger.

Shimon Peres, an elder statesmen who is a Nobel Peace laureate, appealed to the people of Iran to look beyond the current crisis.

The U.S., Israel and the West believe Iran is trying to produce nuclear weapons. Iran denies that. This week the U.S. cranked up its sanctions on Iran to try to force it to stop its uranium enrichment, but Iran responded with defiance.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the 63rd anniversary of the founding of Israel's parliament, Peres directed his remarks to the people of Iran.

"We were not born enemies and there is no need to live as enemies. Do not allow the flags of hostility to cast a dark shadow over your historic heritage," Peres said. "Your people are a sensitive people that aspire for friendship and peace, and not for conflicts and wars."

Israel and Iran had close relations before the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Peres spokeswoman Ayelet Frisch said he had fond memories of Iran then.

"Peres is one of the few people in Israel who remember the warm ties between the two countries. He visited a few times before the revolution, he walked the streets of Tehran, ate at restaurants there and had many Iranian friends," she told The Associated Press.

In contrast to his message to the people, Peres denounced the Iranian regime.

"Iran is not only a threat for Israel, it constitutes a real danger to humanity as a whole," Peres said about the Iranian nuclear program. "The present Iranian regime is Imperialism-hungry, aspiring to be the region's supreme ruler," he said.

Peres, 88, fills a mostly ceremonial post as Israel's president. He spoke after U.S. officials expressed concern that Israel might attack Iran's nuclear facilities in the spring. Israel's leaders rank Iran as their greatest threat because of its nuclear and missile development programs, frequent references by its leaders to Israel's destruction and support for violent anti-Israel groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the West Bank and Gaza.

Earlier Wednesday, Meir Dagan, the former head of the Mossad spy agency said he does not believe Israel faces an existential threat from Iran, a view that contrasts with Israel's prime minister and other leaders.

Since retiring a year ago, Dagan has become a surprisingly vocal critic, repeatedly and publicly accusing Israel's top leaders of irresponsibly pushing for an attack on Iran.

At the launch of an electoral reform movement he chairs, he observed, "I don't think there is an existential threat." He did not specifically mention Iran, but the use of the phrase "existential threat" in Israel generally refers to Iran.

Although Israel says it hopes deepening economic sanctions will pressure Tehran to curb its nuclear ambitions, Israeli leaders haven't ruled out military action, routinely observing that "all options are on the table."

(AP) ? Bread and rolls are the No. 1 source of salt in the American diet, accounting for more than twice as much sodium as salty junk food like potato chips.

That surprising finding comes in a government report released Tuesday that includes a list of the top 10 sources of sodium. Salty snacks actually came in at the bottom of the list compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Potato chips, pretzels, and popcorn ? which we think of as the saltiest foods in our diet ? are only No. 10," said CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden.

Breads and rolls aren't really saltier than many of the other foods, but people tend to eat a lot of them, said Mary Cogswell, a CDC senior scientist who co-authored the report.

Salt is the main source of sodium for most people, and sodium increases the risk of high blood pressure, a major cause of heart disease and stroke. Health officials say most Americans get too much salt, mostly from processed and restaurant foods ? not added from the salt shaker.

Experts have known that the sodium in breads and certain other foods can add up, but even CDC officials were amazed that just 10 foods are responsible for 44 percent of the sodium consumed.

"It's possible to eat a whole bunch of sodium without it seeming salty," noted John Hayes, an assistant professor of food science at Penn State, who was not involved in the report.

According to the CDC, breads and rolls account for about 7 percent of the salt that the average American eats in a day. Next on the list: cold cuts and cured meats; pizza; fresh and processed poultry; soups; fast-food hamburgers and sandwiches and cheese.

Rounding out the list ? and accounting for about 3 percent each ? are spaghetti and other pasta dishes; meatloaf and other meat dishes and snacks like potato chips and pretzels.

Dietary guidelines recommend no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day, equal to about a teaspoon of salt. Certain people, such as those with high blood pressure, should eat even less. But average sodium consumption in the U.S. is around 3,300 milligrams, the CDC study found. Only 1 in 10 Americans meet the teaspoon guideline.

The amount of sodium in food types can vary. For example, a slice of white bread can have between 80 and 230 milligrams of sodium. A cup of canned chicken noodle soup has between 100 and 940 milligrams and 3 ounces of luncheon meat has between 450 and 1,050 milligrams. A small 1 ounce bag of potato chips ranges from 50 to 200 milligrams.

The new CDC report is based on surveys of more than 7,200 people in 2007 and 2008, including nearly 3,000 children. Participants were surveyed twice, each time answering detailed questions about what they had eaten over the previous day. Researchers then broke down what they ate into categories, and assigned sodium amounts.

Salt reduction has become a recent focus of public health campaigns, and some major food makers have taken steps or announced plans to gradually reduce sodium in their products.

CDC officials ? who have long encouraged people to eat more fruits and vegetables ? stopped short of advising people to lay off the bread. But they are encouraging consumers to read labels and, for example, buy brands of bread that have lower sodium.

"People can choose how much salt to add to their food at the table. They can't take it out once it's there," Frieden said.

There's another way to consume less sodium. "Eat smaller portions," Hayes said.

(AP) ? A political firestorm over abortion and birth control spread suddenly to multiple fronts on Tuesday. A high-ranking official resigned from the Komen breast-cancer charity after its backtracking treaty with Planned Parenthood, and Republican presidential candidates blistered the Obama administration for a recent ruling on Catholic hospitals and contraception.

The White House made a point of declaring it wanted to allay the concerns of church-affiliated employers ? many would be required to provide birth control coverage to their workers under the new rules ? but there was no word on how those concerns might be addressed.

The two-track drama pumped new furor into longstanding disputes that sometimes take a backseat in political campaigns because the lines are so familiar and firmly drawn. Last week's Komen-Planned Parenthood dispute stirred many women's groups that support legal abortion. And the Obama ruling touched a nerve with moderate Roman Catholics who support contraceptives but also defend their church's right to run its hospitals and other institutions according to religious convictions.

Republican presidential candidates pounced on what they considered a blunder by President Barack Obama. They believe his administration's ruling will alienate moderate Catholic voters who could prove crucial in November in Ohio, Pennsylvania and elsewhere.

There also could be political repercussions from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure controversy. The breast-cancer charity, facing fierce criticism, mostly from women's groups, quickly overturned its decision last week to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is a major provider of abortions, but it also screens women for breast cancer and other health problems.

In Atlanta, Karen Handel, a Komen vice president who played a role in the fund cutoff decision, resigned Tuesday. A Republican who ran for governor in Georgia, Handel was seen by some as an example of what they felt was an increasing tendency by Komen to bring partisan politics into the charity's decisions.

"I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale and my involvement in it," Handel said in her resignation letter.

Romney, for his part, said he supported Komen's original decision to stop funding Planned Parenthood.

The arguments came as the GOP presidential hopefuls campaigned in several states and Republicans voted in Colorado and Minnesota. Each candidate tried to take advantage of the unusually intense focus on reproductive issues.

Mitt Romney, a Mormon, decried Obama's "assault on religion," telling Colorado voters the new contraception ruling was "a real blow ... to our friends in the Catholic faith."

Newt Gingrich, a Catholic, told Ohio Republicans, "There has been a lot of talk about the Obama administration's attack on the Catholic Church."

But Gingrich, who is struggling to narrow Romney's lead in the GOP nomination race, also turned his fire on the former Massachusetts governor. "Governor Romney insisted that Catholic hospitals give out abortion pills, against their religious belief, when he was governor," Gingrich said.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum, also a strong anti-abortion advocate and a Catholic, made similar remarks about Romney in a written article Tuesday.

As governor, Romney enforced a law that required all Massachusetts hospitals, including Catholic ones, to provide emergency contraception to rape victims. Some Catholics say the so-called morning-after pill is a form of abortion. Romney said he did not support the law, which passed despite his veto. But he also said at the time, "My personal view, in my heart of hearts, is that people who are subject to rape should have the option of having emergency contraception or emergency contraception information."

Romney may have given Gingrich and Santorum a new opening Tuesday when he likened "morning-after pills" to "abortive pills." Romney supported legalized abortion when he ran for Senate and governor in Massachusetts, but he now opposes it.

The White House and Obama's re-election campaign endured another day of sharp debate over the contraception ruling, which falls under preventive-health measures attached to the 2010 health care overhaul. Church-affiliated employers' health insurance plans will have to cover birth control, regardless of the institutions' religious principles. Churches are not covered by the rule, but affiliated employers such as colleges and hospitals are.

The ruling follows the Institute of Medicine's recommendation to treat birth control as preventive health because it promotes maternal and child health by allowing women to space their pregnancies. For religious-affiliated employers, the requirement will take effect in mid-2013.

Workplace health plans will have to cover all forms of contraception approved by the Food and Drug Administration, including the birth control pill, implantable devices, sterilization and the morning-after pill. There is no mandate to cover abortions.

Last Sunday, Catholic bishops in more than 140 dioceses issued denunciations of the decision that were read at weekend Masses.

Sister Carol Keehan, head of the Catholic Health Association ? which supported Obama's 2010 health care law ? summed up the feeling of some moderate Catholics who say political analysts are missing the point.

"It's not the issue of contraception but religious freedom," she said. "It's not about preventing women from buying anything themselves, but telling the church what it has to buy, and the potential for that to go further."

Wall Street Journal editorial writer Peggy Noonan said the contraception ruling might cost Obama the election.

But Jen Psaki, a former Obama aide, said millions of American women, including Catholics, see it differently.

"This is about one issue, and that is making sure all women, especially those who can't afford it, have access to health care," said Psaki, who is Catholic. "And if Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich continue to make a political issue out of such an important human right, they risk jumping the shark with women voters of all political stripes."

Groups on the left and right raced into the debate.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said he hopes the Obama administration "backs down on this rule that violates conscience. If not, we'll do everything in our power to repeal it."

NARAL Pro-Choice America defended the new ruling.

"This is one of the biggest victories for women's health in a generation," said Nancy Keenan, its president. "Nurses, janitorial staff and professors who work at colleges and universities that do not currently cover birth control will get access to contraception."

White House Press Secretary didn't say how employers' concerns might be addressed, though he said there were a lot of ideas for doing it.

He said Obama's focus is making sure that women employed by Catholic-affiliated employers like hospitals, colleges or charities are able to get contraception. At the same time, Carney said Obama wants to respect religious beliefs and convictions.

David Axelrod, a top political aide to Obama, hinted at possible adjustments to the rule or its application. He told MSNBC the administration didn't intend to "abridge anyone's religious freedom."

"This is an important issue," Axelrod said. "It's important for millions of women around the country. We want to resolve it in an appropriate way, and we're going to do that."

Santorum suggested this week that efforts to reach an accord won't be easy.

"The Catholic Church has been arguing and negotiating this for a year, and the administration is saying 'it's just a misunderstanding,'" Santorum said while campaigning in Colorado. "It's just a bunch of bull. They are folks who are trying to use their power to force people to do things that they believe they should do and are right. They don't care about their religion."

Speaking at a 2006 Call to Renewal conference, organized by the religious anti-poverty group Sojourners, Obama said secular Americans were wrong to ask churchgoers to "leave their religion at the door before entering the public square."

But Obama also said religious groups must be recognize "ground rules for collaboration" and the importance of the separation of church and state.
